Cut one 4-1/2" x 4-1/2" square
for center block

Cut four 5" squares of light for
background

Cut two 5" squares of dark fabric

Cut two 5" squares of medium fabric

To assemble easy half square triangle units:  Layer 2 pairs of light/dark 5" squares and 2 pairs of light/medium 5" squares.  Draw one diagonal line, corner to corner on each pair - sew 1/4" on each side of the line on each pair.  Cut on drawn line.  Open and press.  Trim to 4-1/2" squares.  You will have the 4 dark/light and 4 medium/light half square triangle units you need for this block.

Place square and half-square triangle units into block arrangement as show above.  Assemble Rows 1 thru 3. Press.  Sew Row 1 to Row 2. Add Row 3.  Press.  Trim to 12-1/2" if necessary.

Improved Four Patch - March 2009 from Nancy C

A: Light, 4 x 2-5/8" squares
B: 2nd Light, 2 x 6-7/8" squares, cut in half on the diagonal
C: Medium, 2 x 4-3/4" squares
D: Dark, 4 x 2-5/8" squares

Assemble as pictured above.  Makes one 12-1/2" unfinished block.

b:  2 Med. 2-1/2" x 6-1/2"
b:  2 Dark  2-1/2" x 6-1/2"

1.  Assemble light and dark "a" pieces to form 4 patch.  Make 2 units
2.  Assemble light, medium & dark "b" pieces. Make 2 units.
3.  Assamble a to b units as shown.  Trim to 12-1/2" square.
